How to Look For a Job on Social Media

Whilst it is common to look for new jobs on CV websites, it is also possible to gain employment through social media. LinkedIn is the most obvious choice, however its’ competitors such as Facebook and Twitter can also open doors for your career. This can happen in various ways other than simply trawling through job posts.

Twitter:

An effective way to job hunt on Twitter is to include relevant hashtags in your posts. Whilst there are many appropriate hashtags to use, try and keep it down to no more than three hashtags in one post. Depending on the job you’re looking for, certain hashtags may bring you more success than others. Common hashtags include #jobs and #hiring. You can also use more specific hashtags depending on your industry. For example, if you are looking for a job in Finance, then an appropriate hashtag would be something like #financejobs. From the recruiter’s point of view, they will search for hashtags relating to their industry.

Use your real name, usernames like “Spicymix” don’t take you seriously and this causes the hiring manager to doubt your professionalism. Sometimes recruiters look for potential candidates by name, so having your full name certainly helps them find you easily.

LinkedIn:

When putting your current job title on LinkedIn page, bear in mind that recruiters will be putting specific keywords into their quest to find you. Therefore we highly recommend that you put down a job title which is commonly used. For example, Finance Director is more common than Financial Director, Director of Finance or even FD.

Frequent mistakes include leaving your current job position blank or still showing your previous workplace as ‘current’. These mistakes lead to employers doubting whether you are the right person for the job. It will show more initiative to put ‘looking for new opportunities’ on your profile, along with the field or role that you wish to work in.

Connect with people within the field you wish to work in. Research companies in that field and check whether they advertise their vacancies on LinkedIn. Join LinkedIn groups that are within your industry. Like and comment when your contacts post interesting articles.

We also advocate the use of recommendations on your LinkedIn profile. For example recommendations from your previous employers or co-workers can illustrate the skills you have showed in your previous jobs.

Facebook:

There are many active groups which you can join where you can seek employment. These groups can either be geographical or related to your field or a mix of the two. For example ‘ACCA / ACA / CIMA Jobs In London, UK’.

Instagram:

Like with Twitter, hashtags are popular. You can either be passive by including job related hashtags in your posts for recruiters to find you, or you can actively do a search using hashtags to find prospective employers.
