#BreakTheBias

Tuesday 8th March 2022 marked a historic event known as ‘International Women’s Day’.

The event was officially recognized by the United Nations in 1975 and has since been celebrated in more than 80 countries worldwide. This year’s topic was #BreakTheBias, with the symbol being an ‘X’ with crossed arms to represent gender bias, discrimination, and stereotyping.

Sunrock Recruitment believes that it is extremely important to celebrate International Women’s Day not just once a year, but every single day. Women should be honoured and appreciated for their achievements and accomplishments. Over the years women have fought to make a stand in society, economically, politically as well as culturally.

Women across the globe have fought for basic rights like health care and education, and many have achieved them. However, we can not dismiss the fact that there are still some women who till this day do not have these basic human rights. These problems are more likely to still exist in poorer regions such as in some parts of Africa, Middle East and Asia.

The sad and raw truth is that in many of these countries’ girls are forced to leave their education and dreams, and work or stay at home as educating them over their brothers ‘will be of no use’. Young girls do not have the privileges that the young girls in western countries are fortunate to have. The main reason is that women are scared to speak out in fear of ‘disgracing’ their families and ‘letting them down’. They also do not have platforms where they can be supported and given the advice to push themselves forward.

That is not to say that gender bias does not exist in western countries. Recently a Twitter bot targeted big law firms on their gender pay gap. This goes to show that gender bias DOES still exist, whether that is in western countries or poorer countries. We can continue to celebrate International Women’s Day for the next 20 years, but how do we diminish the bias? The only way we can truly achieve equality worldwide is by speaking out, building women-based networks where we can share and voice our experiences and issues.

One single woman can be the most fearless, confident, and ruthless person if she has to deal with problems on her own. Just imagine what women put together can create. Fortunately, now there are many women-based networks full of aspiring and inspiring women who want to create a future for themselves that they dreamt of. They were only able to reach this stage in life because they were supported from one woman to another, whether that was a family member, a friend, a colleague, or even a random person they met.

“Feminism isn’t about making women strong. Women are already strong. It’s about changing the way the world perceives that strength” – G.D Anderson

Happy International Women’s Day to all the young girls and women!
